To assist in enabling people with dementia, in Co Wicklow, retain as much independence as possible and for them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible
- To support people with dementia and their family carers in County Wicklow
- To assist them in maintaining a quality of life
- To enable them to remain at home
- To continue that support into long term care as appropriate
Wicklow Dementia Support is a charity operated and staffed by volunteers to help people with dementia retain as much independence as possible and for them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.
To help achieve these ends, a variety of services has been established by Wicklow Dementia Support (WDS), which comprise of:
AlzPals Befriending service for those in the early stages of dementia, who require friendship and stimulation. It also supports the carer by providing a break for them.
AlzClubs Social groups where people with dementia and their families meet on a weekly basis
Carers Support Group Monthly meetings for carers of people with dementia to meet and support each other
AlzInfo Information service to those using dementia services or having to use dementia services for the first time
It is envisaged that these services will continue to expand and develop over time, but will remain locally run and driven to address the needs of those with dementia in Co Wicklow.
The organisation is managed by a voluntary Board, which appoints facilitators, as appropriate, to the various services.
Volunteers are recruited on an ongoing basis and trained to carry out the work of the organisation.
